The same diamond, two origins
A lab-grown diamond and a natural diamond are made of exactly the same thing: pure carbon crystallised in a cubic structure. Same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale — the maximum —, same refractive index, same fire, same brilliance. None of their physical, chemical or optical properties differ.
The only difference is origin. The natural diamond formed in the Earth's mantle hundreds of millions of years ago before being extracted from a mine. The lab-grown diamond is created in a few weeks in a controlled environment, reproducing the pressure and temperature conditions of the deep Earth.
What the eye cannot see
To the naked eye, and even under a jeweller's loupe, it is impossible to tell a lab-grown diamond from a natural one. Only specialised gemmological equipment, which analyses the crystal's growth patterns and trace elements, can identify a stone's origin. That is why every certified diamond carries its origin laser-inscribed on the girdle, invisible to the naked eye.
What really changes: the price
For identical characteristics — same carat, same colour, same clarity, same cut — a lab-grown diamond today costs a fraction of the price of a natural one: often 50 to 80% less.
